As if the last few weeks weren’t enough, are you ready for the arrival of Old Man Winter? When it comes to snow-removal tools, manufacturers have made great strides in ergonomically correct designs, lightweight but durable materials, and different-sized blades and handles.
Go High-Tech
Want to get out in front of snow and ice? Paterson-based HeatTrak (heattrak.com) produces electric snow-melting mats for steps, walkways and entranceways. They come in two basic sizes, for steps (10 by 30 inches, $50) and walkways (20 by 60 inches, $130). Electrical wiring built into the 1/4-inch rubber thaws snow and ice. The mats can be interconnected to cover up to 25 linear feet of sidewalk and left outdoors all winter.
New this season is a carpet-top mat for large entranceways or in front of garages. HeatTrak products can be found at independent hardware and Home Depot stores, and online at BedBathandBeyond.com, Amazon.com and Sears.com.
