This is the last winter you shovel

Shoveling is hard on your back, and on your heart. A HeatTrak mat is heated, non-slip material: lay it on the path or the steps in October, plug it into a normal outlet, and it melts the snow before it settles. You stay warm inside.

What shoveling actually costs

A shovel sends more people to the ER than the ice does.

Snow shoveling is heavy, cold, early-morning work, and the medical literature treats it as a cardiac event waiting to happen. The numbers below are from a 17-year study of US emergency departments.

  • 11,500snow-shoveling injuries treated in US emergency rooms every year, on average
  • 100deaths a year, almost all of them cardiac, during or just after shoveling
  • 55+the age most of the cardiac cases were; the back, shoulder and head injuries start far younger

She's 74. Hasn't shoveled once.

Plugged the mats in once in October. Untouched since. That is the whole routine: the mat stays out all winter, switches on before the storm, and the path is clear before she opens the door.

How it works

A heating element inside a non-slip polymer material. Plug it in, and it melts up to 2 inches of snow an hour.

No salt, no shoveling, no contractor. The mat stays out all winter and switches on when you need it.

  1. Roll it out once

Lay the mat on your path, steps or stoop in the fall. Anti-slip texture on top, coated grommets to secure it. Engineered to be left outside through the whole season.

  2. Plug into a standard outlet

Every system runs off one Power Unit on a normal 120V outdoor outlet, with its own built-in GFCI. Up to 13 amps of mats connect to one unit with watertight cables.

  3. Switch on before the storm

Flip the switch, use the remote, or add the Wi-Fi outlet and say it to Alexa. The mat warms gently and keeps snow and ice from ever settling.

Same storm, same walkway

The mat is the only thing that changed.

What it costs to run.A 20"x60" walkway mat draws about 300 watts, roughly a small space heater. At the US average of about 17 cents per kWh, an 8-hour storm costs around 40 cents. Your rate will differ; HeatTrak's energy calculator gives you the exact figure for your mats.

What it is built from.A heating element sealed between two layers of durable, non-slip polymer built for years of snow, ice and foot traffic. TUV certified to UL Standard 499 and CSA 22.2. Two-year warranty, and customers in the reviews below are on their fifth and fifteenth winters.

From the reviews

Fifteen winters on the same stairs.

I've been using these for 15 years on my stairs, and wouldn't want to be without them.

This is the 2nd time purchasing the main mat. The first one lasted 5 winters of constant use. We love the product and the service. Very easy to set up.
Dave M. · heattrak.com verified buyer
Love the mats! I'm getting older and that first snow, it was neat to just walk down the dry stairs with snow everywhere else! Installing was a breeze.

After you order

What happens next.

  1. Order today, ships in 1 to 2 business days

From HeatTrak's own warehouse in North America. Residential mats arrive rolled, with the Power Unit and cables you selected.

  2. Lay it out in about 15 minutes

No tools for the mat itself. Four coated grommets secure it if you want it fixed; most customers simply lay it down.

  3. Switch on when the forecast turns

Leave it out all winter. Turn it on before the snow starts and the path stays clear while the rest of the yard fills in.

Questions people ask before the first storm

Straight answers.

Does it really melt snow, or just keep it from sticking?

Both. Switched on before the storm, the mat keeps snow from settling. Switched on after, it melts up to 2 inches of snow an hour. It is not designed to clear a foot of snow that has already fallen on top of a cold mat, so turn it on when the forecast turns.

What does it cost to run?

A 20"x60" walkway mat draws about 300 watts. At the US average rate of around 17 cents per kWh, an 8-hour storm costs roughly 40 cents. Use HeatTrak's energy cost calculator for your exact mats and rate.

Can I leave it outside all winter?

Yes. The mats are engineered to be left out for the season. Many customers roll them up in spring and store them; the storage bag is made for that.

Do I need the Power Unit?

Every system needs one Power Unit on a 120V outdoor outlet. It is included in the Starter Pack, Stair Kit and Walkway Kit. If you buy single mats, add one Power Unit per location of mats.

Is it safe for pets and plants?

The mat is non-toxic and uses no salt or chemicals, so there is nothing on the ground to hurt paws or lawns. Customers in the reviews use them to give dogs and cats a clear path.

What about the warranty?

Two years. The reviews above include a customer whose mat was replaced under warranty after it stopped working.
